Dear Parents and Carers,

This Week in School

A huge well done to our Year 6 pupils, who completed their SATs tests on Thursday of this week. There was a collective sigh of relief when the final test was completed, from adults and children alike, and we are very grateful to the Year 6 parents who organised an Ice Cream Van to come to the school and give the Year 6 pupils a well-deserved ice-cream treat!

The staff administering the tests were so impressed by the resilience and positive outlook shown by the children. We are really proud of them, and all they have achieved in their time at our school. We hope they have a well-deserved rest with their families this weekend.

Sadly we had to cancel our Marion Procession this week due to bad weather, but we have reorganised this event for next week.

In other news, we are delighted to welcome a Ukrainian family to our school community. I had the pleasure of giving them a tour of the school today and we know they will be welcomed with open arms by all. They were facing a long walk to school and back every day, so I contacted The Bicycle Chain in Taunton to see if they could support in any way. I was lucky to speak to the very generous Simon who works there. He has personally offered to donate a bike for Mum so that they can get around more easily. The bike is his own, and he made the offer, as I see it, from the goodness of his own heart. I cannot tell you what a difference this will make and how grateful we are to receive such generosity from a stranger. I will always remember his kind gesture.

RSE – Relationship and Sex Education

Towards the end of the Summer Term, the children will have their annual RSE lessons. RSE is now a statutory subject and we teach pupils an age appropriate curriculum in line with the values of the Catholic Church.  We use a scheme of work called ‘A Journey in Love’ which is approved by the Diocese of Clifton. The scheme promotes a gradual understanding and healthy appreciation of:

self, relationships with others, emotions, love, marriage and family life. There are more materials available to view on our website under RE > RSE Curriculum.

We communicate with parents every year before teaching the RSE curriculum, sharing the materials used and, as always, we value any feedback given. Please look out for further information next half term from your child’s teacher and do not hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions.

RE Newsletters

Recently, we sent out our termly RE Newsletter to keep you up to date with what your child is learning about in RE. Eastertide will soon be ending and the children will begin the Pentecost topic. Next half-term, the children will learn more about Islam, having studied Judaism earlier in the year.

I have had the great pleasure, as RE Lead of the school, to visit every class with our Diocesan Education Officer, Louise White, who was as impressed as I was by the hard work of the children and their wonderful work and responses in RE lessons.

Best wishes,

Edwina McDonnell
