RE and RSE Curriculum

RE CURRICULUM INFORMATION

As a Catholic school, R.E is at the heart of our school life.

The children follow the God Matters curriculum, a Portsmouth Diocese organised Religious Education programme, approved by Clifton Diocese, which forms the basis of the school’s Catholic RE curriculum.

Prayer and worship are an important part of the life of our school. The children and staff pray together each day, either in Collective Worship as a whole school or in smaller groups such as Key Stage assemblies or classes. Each day begins and ends with prayer.

God Matters curriculum

The “God Matters” curriculum is followed throughout our school and is split up into ten themes which are revisited and developed each year to support the faith development of the children.

Autumn Term:

Creation – Explores the creation story and considers why we should look after God’s creation.

Prayer, Saints and Feasts – Explores our relationship with God and how we celebrate our Saints.

Advent – Looks at the season of Advent and how we prepare for Jesus’ birth

Christmas – Looks specifically at the story of Christmas and what it means to us.

Spring Term:

Revelation:  Develops the children's knowledge of how we should follow God's laws and how we are waiting for Jesus to come again.

Lent: Children develop an understanding of how we prepare for Easter through the teachings and example of Jesus.

Holy Week: Children explore each of the different stages of Holy Week and empathise with Jesus and the disciples throughout this time.

Summer Term:

Easter:  Children are given the opportunity to explore the sacrifice Jesus and God made at this time.

Pentecost and Mission:  Explores the events of Pentecost and the importance of the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

Classes also learn about events within our Liturgical Year, relevant Saints and times of particular focus e.g. October as the month of the Rosary.

Understanding what other’s believe: As part of our God Matters curriculum, organised by Clifton Diocese, we are required to teach children about other world religions, alongside Christianity. We will be teaching these through weekly ‘blocks’ to enable children sufficient time to explore another faith. This academic year, we will study Judaism and Hinduism.

RSE and PSHE Curriculum Information

These are two very important areas of the curriculum taught at St. George’s. In PSHE, we use the SCARF scheme of work to allow children to develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to manage their lives, now and in the future. These skills and attributes help pupils to stay healthy, safe, and prepare them for life and work in modern Britain.

RSE is now a statutory subject and we teach pupils an age appropriate curriculum in line with the values of the Catholic Church. This is designed to assist parents by: promoting a gradual understanding and healthy appreciation of self; of growth, of relationships with others; of emotions; love; marriage and family life. We use a scheme of work called ‘A Journey in Love’ which is approved by the Diocese of Clifton. We communicate with parents every year before teaching the RSE curriculum, sharing the materials used with them and we value any feedback given.
