9th June 2023

Dear Parents and Carers,

This Week in School

The children settled in nicely this week after their much-needed half-term break. This final half-term is always the busiest – with lots for teachers and pupils to ‘fit in’ before the summer holidays.

We had a lovely treat this afternoon as we had a visiting theatre group, M and  M Productions, performing a retelling of the well-known book, The Railway Children, to the whole school. This was a lively and entertaining experience and we are delighted to be able to offer such fantastic opportunities to the children.

In other news, a group of Year 5 children went to Dillington House today to attend the Somerset Children’s Parliament speaking competition. They prepared and delivered a five-minute presentation with the theme, ‘Children as Change-makers’ in front of an audience including other participating pupils, a judging panel, special guests and County Councillors. As you can see by their beaming smiles and impressive trophy, they returned as winners of the competition! Mrs Rolf was so impressed with them and I was delighted to hear them excitedly recount what had happened at the event. On asking them what their favourite part was, they all enthusiastically agreed that it was meeting the other children, who were all so friendly, proving that they are not only successful orators, but humble aswell. Well done Maddie, Klaudia and Daniel on representing your class and your school so well!

Hot Weather

Please can we ask you to ensure your child comes to school with sun cream applied, a sun hat and a water bottle. You may send sun cream in their bookbags for them to reapply at lunchtimes. Roll-ons are very easy for younger children to apply themselves and are less messy! There is also some wet weather forecast for the week ahead, so we would ask that you check the forecast each day, as a light raincoat may be beneficial on wet days. Thank you for your support with this.

PSG (Parent Support Group) for the Summer Fete

If there are any parents who would still like to offer their support in helping with our school Summer Fete, do get in touch with the school office by emailing office@stgeorgestaunton.uk and your details will be passed on to the PSG. Alternatively, you may see Laura (Hayden in Year 4’s Mum) on the playground at drop-off or after school with a clip board. She has lots of opportunities to offer to parents who are new to supporting the event, so do catch her to have a chat about how you can help. We greatly appreciate your support.

A Welcome and a Farewell

We are delighted to announce that we have appointed a fantastic teacher to our Year 6 post.

Mr Tom Hughes, who currently works at Bridgwater College Academy (BCA) will be joining the teaching team in September and we are thrilled to welcome him to our school. We were so impressed with Tom at interview: he has so many strengths and wonderful qualities as a teacher and we are confident he will be a great addition to our team.

We are currently advertising another KS2 Post as we offer congratulations to our Year 5 teacher, Mrs Rolf, who has secured a teaching post and will be joining the team at Bishop Henderson school in September. We would like to offer our thanks to Mrs Rolf for her hard work and dedication to the school in her time here and wish her all the best in her new adventure.

INSET and Calendar Dates

The INSET dates for the next academic year have been set, and the school calendar of term time and holiday dates were made available with the last newsletter. The calendar is now on the school website. Please note, as we are a VA school our dates differ slightly from other schools in Somerset and as such, we request you use the St George’s calendar and not the Somerset calendar.

Summer Holiday Clubs

There will be several Summer Holiday Camps taking place on school grounds over the summer holidays. Mr Chidgey will send a letter to parents regarding the dates of these next week.

Best wishes,

Edwina McDonnell
