Writing

At St George’s, English is taught through a rich and engaging Literary Curriculum, following the Literacy Tree approach. Each lesson is rooted in high-quality, significant children’s literature carefully chosen to engage, challenge and support pupils in becoming critical readers and confident, informed writers.

We use carefully selected texts that promote empathy and encourage philosophical enquiry. These books provide meaningful opportunities to develop spoken language through debate, drama and discussion, allowing children to explore the issues raised within and beyond the text.

Writing opportunities are always purposeful and authentic, with a clear audience in mind. Whether writing is short or extended, pupils are given real reasons to write — to explain, persuade, inform or instruct. Wherever possible, writing is embedded within the text being studied or meaningfully linked to other areas of the curriculum.

Writing in role across a wide range of genres is central to our approach. Teachers model appropriate tone and levels of formality, supporting pupils to develop the skills and confidence needed to communicate effectively for different purposes and audiences.
