Dear Parents and Carers,

This Week in School

What a joy it was to see the school turned yellow for the day on Friday. I visited all the classrooms, and the children looked positively sunny. I have even had some suggestions that we should consider changing the school colours to yellow as it really brightened up the place. Sadly, we would miss the St George’s blue too much to do this, but wearing yellow certainly made us all as cheerful as could be, and on World Smile Day, too! What a lovely start to the weekend.

You may have noticed that congratulations are in order for the wonderful Mrs Crocker, who is expecting a new addition in the Spring Term. We were all very excited to hear the good news, and I’m sure you will join us in wishing her well. We will organise a cover teacher to ensure a smooth transition for the children in Year 1, and will inform parents when this temporary post has been filled.

Support for Families in Need

We have received the following information from the Local Authority, and thought we should pass it on:

If you are a family who needs more support, please log on to the Household Support Fund website: Somerset Household Support Fund which will help by providing food and fuel vouchers, and white goods to those who are eligible. There is further information on the website, including who is eligible and how to apply. There are also links to other sources of help available. Search ‘Somerset Household Support Fund’ for further information.

Parent’s Evening

Year 2 and Year 4 will have their first Parent’s Evening appointment this Monday, 10th October

(5.30 – 7.30pm). All other appointments are the following week as listed below in the Upcoming Dates section.

Harvest Festival

The Harvest Festival will take place next week on Wednesday, 12th October at 9.30am in the School Hall. We are so delighted to be able to welcome parents back to these celebration events and we really hope you can join us.

We will be doing our usual collection of non-perishable items and we will be donating these to the Taunton Food Bank. Having looked on their website, urgently required items are: porridge oats and instant porridge pots; cup-a-soups; instant mash; tinned vegetarian meals; sponge puddings; chocolate and sweet treats. The charity makes up food parcels which are balanced and designed to fit together to provide 3 nutritionally-balanced meals plus snacks per person for 3 days. The priority list doesn't reflect the full range of items they give out in foodbank parcels - just the ones they are currently short of. The usual tinned food, pasta and rice, etc. can also be donated.

We are very aware that it may not be possible for all families to donate this year, and we hope you understand that there is no pressure to do so. Please only donate if you feel you can.

Harvest Mass – Readers

On Sunday 16th October, children from our school will help to lead a Harvest Mass at St George’s Church. This will be at 9.15am. We are asking that members of the choir are present to add their lovely voices to the occasion. In addition, if any child would like to read at the Mass, do encourage them to let me know and I will try my best to find them a reading part. I have had two volunteers already and there are a few parts left.

Reception Intake Applications

Time to start school? If you have a child born between 1st September 2018 and 31st August 2019, then now is the time to apply for a place at our school for admission from September 2023 onwards. You must complete an application form that is available from the school admissions team of County Hall at Somerset County Council. Please ensure you apply by the closing date of 15 January 2023. If your child is Catholic, you must also provide a copy of the baptism certificate to the school by this date.

Best wishes for a lovely weekend,

Edwina McDonnell
